Hi -

Writing from my Macbook. I can't seem to get my desktop PC to be stable running. It started a few days ago and one of the following scenarios occur, in no particular order.

1. Most of the issue is where i'll be doing stuff like gaming or something and the PC will just turn off. No error, just off like someone pulled the power plug. This will happen randomly, sometimes a few days in between, sometimes as soon as it starts and it shuts off.

2. Today in particular when I try to get it to run and it finally comes up to windows it'll be just a few minutes when things freeze up and just stays there. Can't move my mouse anymore or type. Just frozen. I have to shut it off. It's even done this when I was in the BIOS; screen just freezes and can't do anything.

I have an asus x99 strix gamming motherboard. It has codes on the board as it boots up that it goes through during the boot cycle. I've seen it a few times stuck on one of the following codes (not everytime):

  • 60 - DXE Core is started
  • 66 - CPU DXE initialization is started
  • 69 - System Agent DXE initialization is started

Is this a CPU issue? It's the Intel i7-6800k. I have watched temps and under load it's in the 30's. Though, these may be coincidences. Nothing is consistent.

Any ideas what may be going wrong? It's so hard with no error/error code. Not sure if it's PSU, GPU, CPU, Mobo.....

Thanks

No ideas?

Try moving the SSD/HDD from whatever SATA/M.2 slot its in to another. I once had a SATA header die on me and had similar symptoms. If that doesn't work try booting from a USB stick (windows/Linux recovery disk) and see if it still freezes

I swapped to a new ssd and same problem.

I swapped to different ram and same issue.

CPU, Mobo, or PSU seem to be the best candidates. I'm starting to think CPU but not sure since CPU and Mobo seem to have similar symptoms.

Ideas? Those are very expensive to just buy and test with.

I'm now at the point where I can't get it to even get to POST. The LED with codes on the mobo just stops at a random number (i.e. its not consistent). But can't get to POST at all. I'm figuring its probably either Mobo or CPU. If I knew which was most likely then I may try to buy a replacement and test.

Thoughts?
