Troubleshooting Windows Update issue

Go to solution Solved by Th3Desolation,

Quick update.

After thinking about what the issue was and how to fix it I decided that after nearly 8 years it was time to upgrade. So I went ahead and build a new PC and used a fresh install of Windows on a new NVMe SSD. So far no updating issues. I didn't replace my GPU for reasons we're all aware of but even without the GPU upgrade some games run much smoother already. Others run about as well as they did on the old PC. Either way it just works now. I still need to stresstest the system but so far I have no reason to believe that it won't work.

Anyway. Thanks for the help 🙂

Hi guys

I'm new in the forum but I've been watching Linus Tech Tips since 2011. Damn just realised that it's been 10 years. Well anyway I have an issue with Windows Update.

I've build this PC in October of 2013. Since then I've upgraded the GPU (from a GTX 770 to a GTX 1080), I replaced the PSU (the old one failed a year ago) and I've added a second SSD last year. And obviously I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 when it came out.

Now since about April/Mai (not exactly sure when it started) there was a Windows Update up. I've installed it but already during the installation something strange happened. The PC started to have hickups every second. It would freeze for half a second then work for a second and the freeze again and that nonstop. I rolled back the update thinking there was a corrupted file and updated again. Yet the issue persisted. I've cleared the Windowd update Cache multiple times. Nothing worked so far. The old version of Windows before the update runs just fine so since I couldn't come up with a solution I rolled back and paused updates. I tried to update a few times over the past few months hoping whatever caused the issue would be fixed by Microsoft but so far nothing changed.

Right now it won't let me pause the update cycle so if I don't find a solution I'll have to stop updates over the command prompt.

Anyway guys I'd really like to update windows and get rid of this pesky issue but I'm out of ideas how to fix it. There must be a way to fix it, there always is.

Oh and I'm running 16GB of RAM, an i7 4770K on a Maximus IV Formula (is the MB I think). Windows is on my 250GB SSD.

I've also tried enabling and disabling XMP but that didn't change anything.

I've added a 3 second clip to show the issue.

I sincerely hope someone here can help me. Thank you guys in advance.

Try testing the CPU with Prime95 with the Small FFTs option for a hour.

Try testing the RAM with Memtest86 for 3 hours.

Tell us if you get any errors while testing.
