That will depend on what your IT course will have you do.

 

If it is just networking and PC troubleshooting. An i5 or R5 with 8 or 16GB of RAM and an 256 to 500GB SSD will be more than enough. I will say that you will want to make sure that your laptop has some USB and Ethernet ports on it. Otherwise get ready for the dongle life.

 

If your course will have you running virtual machines then you may want, but won't necessarily need something more powerful. I ran at most 4 virtual machines on a laptop with an 8th gen i5, 16GB of RAM and a 500GB SSD. Sure more CPU cores and more RAM would have been nice, but not necessary. I only had 2 courses that required that I run virtual machines and they were separated by a year, so it may not even be worth investing in a higher end machine unless you will be using it all the time.

they both make very good laptops, and especially Linux support is superb
