I'm beginning to think this may be some issue with the firmware, or my apartment complex's network configuration.

Basically, I bought the Asus N66U and it worked like a dream for about a month. Then suddenly, I can't login to the webGUI because of a "settings have been changed, connect with the new in, etc" error. There was also no Internet connection whatsoever to connected devices. So I did a factory reset. After that process 5x over, I figured a hardware issue and RMAed the thing.

I get a new device and it's also fine for a while, but this time I get the same error message on the GUI, no routing rules work, but there is still Internet connectivity to clients. It only happens every few weeks, but requires a factory reset each time. Power cycling does nothing.

Any ideas what could be causing this periodically? Apparently, this error page is an overly generic message that was added recently which could be caused by a number of things.

Perhaps it's the Router. Got another one you could try for a week or 2?

I wanted to do that originally actually. Although, I wasn't particularly sure about any specific instructions regarding flashing this router compared to others. I've flashed dd-wrt on a router before with TFTP. This says it can be done from the stock webGUI. Do you happen to know if that's true?

I've installed in on a N66U before. it was rather easy.

Did you use the stock web GUI too or flash it from command line?

For reference, you should do it with the recovery page rather than the suggested webGUI instructions.

Thanks for the help! I hope this fixes my issues.

It could just be buggy with that one setting that most technically inclined people don't use (ie. media prioritization or port forwarding) so the problem isn't common so no fix will likely come, try running with nearly all default settings if still no dice try auto updating or in the case the gui doesn't have an auto update setting then download the appropriate firmware for Asus's site and manually upgrade it from the gui This is exactly why I don't recommend buying networking gear from a hardware company that has no roots in the networking businesses (not just limited to Asus), it doesn't mater how good the hardware is if the software is unusable but love how people still recommend Asus routers because Linus uses one.

To be fair, I bought this router before I ever heard a Linus recommendation for it. But you're right. There needs to be a solid software backbone for any product to succeed.
