Hi everyone,

I've got an issue where my computer reboots itself without warning sometimes seconds after logging into windows, sometimes a bit later.

A repair guy's already picked it apart and tested the individual components with no apparent issue in his shop.

Motherboard: Gigabyte B550 Aorus Pro

Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX Black 32GB (2x16GB) / 3200MHz / DDR4

PSU: Corsair HX1000 V2 / 1000W / 80+ Platinum

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X / 12 cores / 24 threads / 4.8 GHz

GPU: ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3080 Gaming OC 10GB

Monitor new: Samsung G7 C27G75 / 27" / WQHD / VA / 240Hz / 1ms

Monitor old: BENQ XL2411Z / 24" / 144Hz / 1ms (currently at 60Hz due to cabling through an adapter due to port incompatibility with new gpu)

I've had this setup for a few months without noticing anything major beyond intermittent screen flicker on the new monitor while casually browsing. Though I did have to update some motherboard firmware to get it to run in a stable state. Recently while playing Pathfinder:Kingmaker after reaching a very specific area the pc would instantly reboot itself. Noticed that using the old monitor drastically reduced the chances of this crash happening (completely disconnecting new monitor as just using old as primary wasn't enough) though it still crashed at times with the old. Did some further troubleshooting that resulted in a windows reinstallation which unfortunately made this same crashing issue happen while not even in a game. The only thing that seems to stop the crashing seems to be turning down the refreshrate on the new monitor from 240hz. Currently in the process of running 3DMark stress tests at a lower refreshrate, seems stable at 60 and 120 so far. I've during the different rounds of troubleshooting installed up to date nvidia drivers and firmware on motherboard & new monitor without effect.

Anyone got the faintest clue where the problem might lie?

Thanks for reading!

If it’s not hardware it’s software.  Those are the only two parts.  A windows reinstall perhaps as a “just to be sure” move if that hasn’t been done already. It’s possible I suppose that for whatever reason the tech missed something.  Have you tried a different OS? Like a LinuxliveCD from a thumb drive or something?

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

Hi,

If anyone ever searches for this same problem and finds it.

Repairguy removed one central screw connecting the motherboard to the pc case saying that that has in his experience previously caused short circuits. This particular solution didn't help me but might help you.

I noticed my keyboard & mouse being really slow to start up after reboots which led to me completely disconnecting a usb hub I had a bunch of stuff connected to. This together with some windows update solved my crashing issue. Screen still occasionally flickers while browsing and I have no intention of testing to see if it really was the hub or not but it might work for you.

Cheers!
