Random System Freezes

Hi, sometimes my computer out of nowhere just starts to stop working. It starts slow with chrome tabs not responding very fast. From there, certain applications start to not respond, either being stuck on the screen or not able to be popped up from the taskbar. Pressing control + alt + delete or trying to open task manager from the taskbar didn't even show response from the screen. As far as I know the CPU didn't spike up in load as the fans didn't ramp up. In the end nothing would respond at all, so I held down the start button and shut down and rebooted the pc. And now everything is fine. But this has happened twice now, please help. What is going on is here? Is there anything that can be prevented?
