hello everyone so my pc just started to act up on me where whenever i add a monitor via an hdmi cable to my gpu or i change the input from one to another it causes my whole pc to kind of freeze/crash i am unable to move my mouse or anything the only think i can do it restart my pc where it works fine if the monitor are both displaying my pc but the second i switch one away from it and switch it back so it happens again

Troubleshooting is a process of elimination where least bothersome stuff is eliminated one by one.  Information can shorten things immensely.  There are a few pinned posts at the top of the troubleshooting section that describe what sort of information is almost always needed.  Adding such information can often make things go easier and faster.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

That’s one set.  Answers a lot of stuff.  You don’t have an old machine for one so there’s a lot of possibilities out of the way right there.   It’s also a pretty powerful machine.  8 cores and higher end graphics power. There are more than a few people who play esports games on 730s with ddr3 machines around here.  The Maximus hero thing is useful because that can be looked up and the entire set of what it has (ports etc.) can be simply referenced.

i notice it’s an 11 series cpu with a 1080. This means used graphics card. We’re you the original owner and it came from another machine or did you buy it used?

More possibles down.  You don’t have a scam gpu for one.  Simplifies things.

this “an” hdmi cable..  is there one or more than one?  Hdmi cables have difficulties ive seen conflicting reports on.  I’ve got sources here that have said there has only ever been one spec for hdmi cables but another that says no, and they are specifically and uniformly marked.  I don’t know which is right.  (They of course could both be right and I’m just missing something obvious)

“add a monitor” is perhaps vague.  A first monitor?  Additional  Are you trying to do it when the computer is already running?

ahh ok let me clarify sorry i have 2 monitors one that i swap between 2 inputs for console games (streaming) and its also used as a monitor for my pc when im not playing on my console and this monitor uses 2 hdmi cables that link to the console and to my desktop and i have a second monitor that uses a display port and its my main monitor and it doesnt have any other HDMI cable that goes into it anbd so the main problem is that when i was first on the desktop i could swap between the 2 inputs without my entire desktop freezing up and requiring a restart to use again

So you were taking advantage of the hot swap feature of your hdmi to flip the monitor between your pc and a console but the hit swap stopped working which is the problem. Happened a few weeks ago.  Could be a win10 update thing.  The hot wrap capacity of hdmi is old.  Few people actually make use of it.  Things I can think of off hand are it  Could be something broke it and practically no one noticed.  Also could be you wore out a cable plug or a port with frequent unplug and replugings. Could also be something completely different and unrelated though.  The entire console section of this is something o can’t even approach.  I don’t like  game controllers so I’ve never even owned a console myself. I don’t know a lot about their particulars.  There could be something on that side that might matter that I know nothing about.

So hot swap feature applies but worn ports and plugs may not be
