That could be image retention on your LCD. If you leave something up on your monitor long enough it may be temporarily "burned" (not the right term for this but its the easiest way to describe it) into the display so that it always has a shadowed or transparent effect.

How long would that last for?

Having something like a video playing or turning your display off for about an hour usually fixes it.
