I'm looking for some good note taking software for Windows, with similar functionality to Apple Notes (but I do not want to use the web version) and Notion. I did download Notion and like how it works but would rather be able to keep a local copy of my notes on my device. This would have to let me save the notes to a specific folder, as I often need to save specific notes for projects to a specific folder for that project, often sometimes a few subfolders deep, so that I can keep things organised. I have used Word for notetaking in the past but I find it just too much for casual note taking, and have also tried OneNote, but don't really like using it, especially since it lingers after closing, which I do not want on my laptop.

If you have any recommendations, I'd love to hear them, thank you!

Have you tried Evernote yet? The free tier does have some pretty lame size/upload limits (25MB per note and 60MB monthly), but there is the chance that it might work out for you.

Thank you very much for the suggestion. I have in the past yeah but it seemed to me that Evernote relied on cloud uploads to places that you can't manually access or choose. I basically need something that allows me to save as Word does, so to a specific folder for just one set of notes, but also that allows for easy and focused note taking. I hope I'm not looking for a program that doesn't exist 😂

Notepad? Or Notepad++ for dark themes?

What functionality you want?

I need something simple, but I feel Notepad is too simple. I have used both Notepad, and Notepad++ in the past but neither suit me incredibly well.

I basically just need to be able to save notes locally to wherever I need on my machine, whilst making simple notes with bullet points, at most with bold/italics/underlining.

I have also tried Simplenote, Notion (too overcomplicated) and Joplin (forgets when I've pressed enter twice to leave a free line) and I can't save in specific local folders with any of them.

Thanks for the reply!

There's WordPad which is simple rich text processor. But that's about all software I've used.

How did I forget WordPad!! That's a great suggestion, thank you!

One thing though, is there a possibility of MS ever removing it without warning?

Edit = I have just gone back to OneNote, although I originally didn't like it, that was on the iPad rather than Windows, so I think I might use it instead as it will allow me to save my Notebooks locally and organise them as needed.
