Windows Backup Issues

I am at a complete loss and I've exhausted all of my ideas on how to fix this. Context: I am attempting to make a Windows backup/system image of my PC with a spare HDD that I have laying around. Every time I try to back up my system, however, I keep getting error codes, with the most recent one being 0x80070015. I've re-partitioned my system reserve partition to >500mb and my HDD has more than enough space for the back up (estimated 500gb with over 700gb of available space). I'm all out of ideas. Does anyone have any experience or can point me in the right direction please?
