BGA CPU upgrade?

Go to solution Solved by WhitetailAni,

If you can replace the chips, yes, it would work. They're exactly the same except one is 1C/2T (D425) and one is 2C/4T (D525).
However:

Do you a BGA rework station to reattach (and maybe remove) the CPU? A heat gun can remove it, but it won't reattach it correctly.

I own a Foxconn N15235 motherboard (DDR2 800MHz, Intel GMA 3150), which has an Intel Atom D425 soldered on it. Is it possible to upgrade it to a D525?

With soldering out of the way, I think it should work. It has the same chipset (I think).

If you have the necessary equipment for soldering, you might still run into issues with the BIOS that may or may not support/blacklist that CPU. If the same board is available with that CPU, chances are good it is supported.

Thanks for the tip. No, I do not own a BGA rework station; I just like daydreaming a lot. I got into soldering a month or so ago, and I'm going to college next year for electronics repair.

Thanks for the tip.

I just looked them up, and the boards seem to be pretty much identical. The only difference is that the D52S one has a CPU fan, which I already have.

In theory I don't see why it wouldn't work. But if you just got into soldering a month ago and on top of that don't have the required tools...yeah, you aren't gonna successfully desolder, reball, and resolder a CPU.

As I said, I like daydreaming. I don't actually plan on doing this in the nearest future. I think, once I graduate, I will have enough experience to do this, and God willing, the aforementioned equipment will be actually affordable then.
