Recently took the plunge to upgrade an aging rig to NVME. I bought an Asenno M.2 NVME drive and adaptor, both from eBay, links below.

My Asus p8h61 r2.0 motherboard does NOT natively support NVME drives (no connector on board) so I bought a M.2 to PCI-e adapter also. With no other drives attached, not even my boot SSD, and checking all BIOS settings, both SATA and On Board Devices tabs do not see it as there is no native controller. It does receive power as both adaptor and the Asenno M.2 LEDs light up to show this... Neither a Windows 10 installer, Linux Mint latest can see this...

Is the issue with the adaptor or with the drive? I've no way to troubleshoot the drive as I have no rig capable of it being natively used.

In order to boot from NVME devices on pre Devils Canyon (Z97 era) you need to have a modded BIOS. Edit, I reread your post, and I am not sure if this is related to BIOS support or not. If you are not sure if that NVME is working or not, you can get a NVME USB enclosures for cheap and see if it gets detected that way.

I think the USB based enclosure would be simpler... As I have never flashed a BIOS, modded or not... Unless it has a Windows based installer that does it for me.

As for the actual drive, it's brand new, was still sealed. It's very rare for any SSD to fail I'm sure, more so from factory.

Edit: Devils Canyon? I thought it was an Ivy bridge based system? Please correct me if I am wrong about this...

H61 is Sandy Bridge era chipset that also support Ivy Bridge. What I said there is Pre-Devil's Canyon systems needs to flash a modded BIOS in order to boot from NVME, otherwise booting from NVME is simply not possible.

NVME's use an PCIE X4 connection so that adapter in theory should be fine. As others have mentioned you most likely will not be able to use it as a boot device.

I can't comment on the quality of that specific SSD as I've never used that brand before.
