I'm not brilliant with sound stuff, so I'll allow someone else to explain the differences. But most of the time headphones are better quality than headsets for the same price. If you need a mic, then headsets can be useful, but you can still get pretty cheap mics to use with headphones. Also, 150 what? Potatoes?

First, if you do get surround sound, please get virtual surround. The difference between 5.1 and 7.1 are two virtual speakers. Stereo just has left and right audio.

Get a good stereo headphone and a modmic. Either that or get a gaming headset from sennheiser or audio technica.
