Hi everyone,

I'm looking to a VR headset to do a bit of workout while at home and was wondering a few things:

I have a 1060 with a 6 core AMD cpu and 16Gb of ram, is that good enough ?

I was thinking of the HTC vive, because occulus is out as you need FB account.

But you have several models and bundles, what should I get ?

Thanks in advance!

Do you know if the AMD CPU is a Ryzen or an FX series? Ryzen would be better.

You should be able to play most made for VR games although you wont be turning the graphics settings up much.

I've got a laptop with a 1060 i5 7300HQ and 16GB of ram and VR has been perfectly playable on it though more graphics power is always better.

I'm assuming you have a desktop so the 1060 will have Displayports (my laptop only has HDMI so not all headsets work)

With oculus out, how much are you looking to spend?

You might be able to find a Used Original HTC Vive for a decent price but make sure all the components work before buying.

This will give you very accurate tracking but the resolutions isn't very high

The Vive Pro and HTC Cosmos Elite use the same tracking and controllers and have higher resolutions but are also quite a bit more money new.

The Valve index is the best overall lighthouse based VR system but it also over 1K USD.

The Windows Mixed Reality headsets (pretty much just the Reverb G2 currently) don't track the controllers as well so while they are good for flight/racing games they wouldn't be my goto for boxing/beatsaber workout type stuff.

I would also about the regular HTC Cosmos as the camera tracking on it can be worse than the WMR headsets in some cases.

HTC and DecaGear are supposed to be coming out with some new lower priced headsets but we won't know how good they are until after they launch.

It might be worth holding off until HTC announce their new headset on May 11th. It might not be a consumer one but still worth holding out just in case.

The Rift S competitor, the Vive Cosmos, is supposed to be a pretty bad headset (especially for tracking). If you're going down the route of Vive Pro or Cosmos Elite, you're better off going with the Valve Index. If you're on a tight budget then a second hand original Vive might be the best option (I personally hate their controllers though). I wouldn't suggest getting a Reverb G2 if you have a 1060.

Windows mixed reality headsets are fine 99% of the time for Beat Saber and are so easy to use. Reverb G2 has an amazingly good screen, but isn't exactly cheap. A first gen WMR headset used to be available for $150, but not so much anymore unless you really dig for one. A used first gen Rift/Vive might be worth it if you can't stomach the Reverb G2 price and can't find a deal on a WMR set.

Hello,

Thanks for your reply. This is the exact config I have:

AMD Ryzen 5 3600X

16Gb RAM

Nvidia GTX 1660 (my bad not a 1060, bad memory ;))

I'm not in a hurry, so if HTC are going to release a new headset soon i will wait.

After reading your message, i will certainly go for a cosmos, i have room for the lighthouses and don't mind paying 1k, i prefer to have the good precisions for games like beatsaber.

Thanks!

If you have the room and the budget I'd recommend the Valve Index over the Cosmos Elite if it's available in your area.

It Uses the same base-stations as the HTC Vive, Pro, and Cosmos Elite but is better is just about every way except for a wireless option.

Much better and more useful controllers, better display with up to 144hz refresh rate, better audio.

The only place HTC Cosmos Elite wins out is the ability to use it with the HTC wireless adapter. Note wireless PCI-E card was very iffy on Ryzen systems at launch so might want to read up on that before going wireless.

Tanks for the advice but the valve index is not available in my country. 😞

Do NOT get the Cosmos without getting the base stations. Far worse tracking than even early WMR.

Exactly this. The tracking on the Cosmos is utterly shite. It's such a shame that you can't get the index in your country. The vive controllers are horrible.
