Is there a reason as to why speed fan would cause a computer to crash. I was checking out my father-in-laws computer and its kind of old, uses ddr2, it is a dell pre-built not sure the model. But I downloaded speed fan and when I went to run it the screen went to a weird pixeled screen? Help

speed fan reads specific memory addresses so it in no way should be incomparable with older hardware and in real terms his pc isnt that old. core 2 duo was well supported even oem versions so i dunno where your getting this little gem from., each update for new chipsets is incremental so any none standard addresses that have been used in the past will still work in future editions, they just keep adding the new addresses to old data piles.

you see addresses like smbus $0500 when you run speed fan. its actually reading a standard chipset address that is used by all the manufacturers including oem so its very very unlikely that a new version of speed fan will crash on an old pc. although an old version of speedfan can often crash on a new machine.

if you think im wrong install an old version of speed fan and i guarantee if its the programs fault it will crash. but my guess is if you look in the event logs you will find its a paiging or some other fault in windows rather than a hardware fault being picked up by speedfan.

if it is speed fan then its likely your download was corrupted and when you ran it you got a stack over flow which resulted in the screen displaying a none standard part of memory.
