HDMI ARC stopped working

So I have a Samsung QN65Q6FNA TV and a Bose soundbar 500. They were working fine until one day audio output switch to the tv speakers. The option for HDMI output disappeared from the audio options. I checked and the optical out works with the soundbar but I can not control the volume with my Roku or tv remotes when it is connected with the optical cable. 
Any suggestions?

unplug the hdmi wait a minute plug back in
try a different hdmi cable.

Agreed. Loss of ARC is usually either a software glitch where the good old unplug everything and let it sit for 5 minutes and plug it back in and try again will work, or usually the cable having a bit of an issue.
If that doesn't work then you most likely have a hardware failure. Try the sound bar on another TV and see if it works, at least then you can track down what exactly is playing up?

Yes it was an ARC issue. It took that 10 min with it unplugged for it to reset.
