Hey everyone,

Recently I have had some problems with Windows Defender. Approximately every 15 minutes Windows Defender moves to the top of the task manager list for CPU usage. It puts a full load on one of my CPU cores and spikes up to 65 °C for about 1.5 minutes ramping up my CPU fan in the process. I am assuming that this is a background quick scan, but I do not know (the last background scan time reported by Windows Defender does not always match up with these events). I created a new trigger for it so that it only does it when I sign out but it still triggers every 15 minutes. It is most noticeable when idling.

I am currently running an i9-10850k on Windows 10 Education edition version 10.0.19042.

Does this make any sense? I know antivirus software takes some horsepower but pegging my 10 core CPU seems wrong to me.

I would just like it to either reduce the frequency of scans or reduce the impact on the CPU.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Alec

Check for windows updates and do a full scan.
