I currently have a wireless router supporting a max of 100 Mbps on the LAN port but has a gigabit WAN port, so I'm planning of buying a 5 Port gigabit switch . I'll connect the ethernet cable from the ISP to the switch and then connect another ethernet cable between the switch and the router and connect a desktop PC that I have directly to the switch 'coz the LAN port on PC supports gigabit speeds, will this work?? I know I'll be exposed on the public internet due to the lack of a private IP address assigned by the NAT on the router, but I have that covered..

(Currently having a 500 Mbps connection so going through all this hassle)

Ryzen 5 2400G -B450M DS3H Motherboard (Gigabyte) - 16GB RAM (CL 16, 3000MHz) - 240GB SSD (Kingston) - 1TB HDD(Seagate) - 450W PSU (Corsair)

It should yes. Use the router for wifi and DHCP and connect your clients to the switch should work just fine.

you should be able to as long as every link is gigabit between the PC, Switch, Router, and ISP.

If your ISP allows you to directly connect a pc to the outlet (some have that locked down), and let's you have multiple IPs (some IPs are very conservative with their IP allocations) then yes it will work.

Your wired devices won't be able to talk to your wireless devices though.

That's not an issue in my case, My ISP supports that and I don't need to communicate with my wireless devices....

Thanks man......

Then it will be fine. But as I said, your wireless devices and wired devices will be on different networks and won't be able to talk to each other. Also, your wired devices will be exposed directly to the internet.

That's typically not a good idea because of things like various vulnerabilities in Windows built in services (like SMB). But it sounds like you've already though of that. You need to be very careful with what ports you got open.
