Yes, any USB storage will do, as long as you format it with fat32 (or any other format it supports).

Do you think there would be any issues if the read only switch on the adapter was on.

 

Edit: To clarify, I'm asking because I have recently begun extensive research and self teaching tech security/maintenance. I am now currently learning about firmware malware/rootkits and was wondering about hypothetical alternatives to CD Roms.

You're over thinking it. The bios update will read the signature of the file, and a slight difference will abort it.

O.K. thanks a bunch. I figured as much,  but I have only done a few bios updates (using a regular flash drive) during my relatively short time with computers and I still have a bit of the fear that is propagated and associated with interacting with the bios.
