I don't know i posted this topic at a correct location or not. If wrong, please clarify me so i wount do the same mistake next time.

These few questions are in my mind for a long time. Hope you guys can help me. You guys all are the best guy! :)

1. I saw some home server build and they have some LED indicator like a real server to indicate the activity of the drives and some maybe the health status of the hdd? How to do that?

2. If i hook up a couple of hdd like 6 of them through a raid card, how window OS will differentiate it so that when i'm maintain it wount be a mess for me as i might mis-take a drive out if i dont have the led indicator as i said above this ><

3. Maintaining a home server, was it easy or its take wayyyyyyyyy more time and work to do so? rather than comparing to a Drobo and NAS.

Thanks guys. Hope that you guys can help me out. CHEERS! :D

I have seen drive bays for both enterprise level equipment as well as conventional 5.25" slots that display disk activity however they're hard to come by. Most standard cases will have a drive activity light next to the power LED on the front panel to show that something is going on.

To Windows, a RAID array will appear just as a single drive - just with a lot of storage. RAID setup is configured in the BIOS.

And finally, once you've got the setup done, it's as easy as just leave it to run. Things like nightly backups can be scheduled to run automatically through Windows Home Server.

I'll see if I can find Linus' video on this topic..

P.S I'll also move this to storage

1.

I bought a 19" Server Rack on ebay for 50€. something like this you can get really cheap if you are patiant

http://www.ebay.de/itm/CHENBRO-RM21502-2U-Rackmount-Server-Chassis-SATA-Backplane-/230946418725?pt=US_Rackmount_Cabinets_Frames&hash=item35c57ab025

2. A raid appears like one drive in windows. i asume you mean how du you find out witch drive is dead if you have no indicator lights? Raidcards have thier own bios you can see there which drive is dead.

3. When you are done with your setup you forget you have a homeserver :D it'S really low maintenance as long as nothing brakes.

O.O the rack was cool. But it's there any other option for the indicator? cause i saw someone used on his personal computer rig and was awesome.

2. if all the drives i get is the same, the raid card bios still can see n differentiate the dead drive?

3. besides that, if the spaces is running up..... meaning i gotta get another space which is larger/equiavalent to copy it over? (Although i know its kinda impossible to fully write a home server easily...) but just ask xD

PS: i got a seagate barracuda 1.5TB break once within 2 month == its just suddenly crank out a loud sound and then like dead, cannot read at all. so i kinda worry of the harddisk i get in my country. (From malaysia)
