Hello there im facing some serious latency issues in games like latency spikes that are happening in all games and are constant.
My gear is rb4011 mikrotik wifi version also international bought it from amazon.com and i live in the US
im using for the modem netgear cr1150v
I tried all kind of troubleshooting but no solution, including port forwading, reinstalling windows, resettings my modem/router and getting 2 technicians to my house to check on the line also checking on the main pole with no solutions.
I tried to buy a seperate ethernet adapter to see if my problem is my pc but same issue.
I am not a networking geek and therefore im still learning, about basic networking and how it works, and somebody suggested mikrotik on  discord
I didn't do any kind of setup on the mikrotik router and only used the quick profile setup they provided the only thing i did i put a password for it for wifi but that's it.
If someone can provide some insight about the issue i will really appreciate it because it's really frustrating when it comes to online gaming.
And i also tried to ping my router/modem you know basic troubleshooting steps and the MS came out fine
Is there a possibility here of the mikrotik router is actually defective and if so how i can test?

1 - What are your speeds?

2 - Are the spikes consistent?

  • across games or just a single one
  • time between spikes
  • time of day
  • another device is streaming, uploading photos (cell), etc.

Port forwarding has no effect on latency and I would undo those rules added.

The 4011 can basically handle anything you throw at it so at this time that can be taken out of the equation. Mikrotik will give you all the information you might need to troubleshoot. Login to the web interface, since you did the quick setup its 192.168.88.1 and do the following:

1. Go to tools > traceroute and enter in a URL such as amazon.com and change the protocol from icmp to udp

Let that run for 5-10 mins and pay attention to the average and worst columns. Screen shot and repeat a few times to get an average

2. Go to interface, double click on the port that connects the 4011 to the netgear modem, scroll down to the bottom where you will see a graph and just leave it running for a bit. This is to see if you are maxing either you download or upload periodically

Report back what you find. If you post the traceroute results make sure you black out the first 2 hops for privacy
