Price range will help.  I know that klipsch bookshelves are always good and have been around for a long time so there is a good chance of finding them used.  I have some polk audio TSi100's and find they don't have much character.  They produce decent sound but audio is my hobby so I had to upgrade.

But I would look into name brands and what model line they are and go by reputation since reviews will be limited.

If you want to buy new and like bass the Micca RB42's can fool you into thinking you have a subwoofer hooked up, but the jury is out on power requirements, I have them on a rack mounted amp right now that I have to turn down A LOT to still get a rather loud listening situation.

50wpc should be enough to drive most any bookshelves though.  It just comes down to what you can find used which leads to suggestions being almost impossible to make.  Go off brand and model line quality and maybe known tendencies for that brand.  EX: Klipsch is very efficient and rather "bright" or high in treble.

Audio go Brrrrrr
