I just recently made the decision to upgrade my rig since I fortunately snagged a 3080. I had all the parts ready and decided I should go ahead and start.

Specs-

Intel I9 10900k

ROG Strix 3080 White Edition

Corsair H150i

Corsair 680x

Asus ROG Strix Z490-e

Corsair 850w Gold PSU

Once I finished the build and turned it on to test, the rgb on the cooler and fans went crazy and eventually got fried or either turned red. I smelled a faint smell of smoke, but it quickly faded away. I knew something was wrong instantly and had a few friends look at the temps with me as well if it would even start up. It booted up bios and windows just fine, but the CPU temps were 100C as windows started and around 55-70 just in the bios. I replaced the motherboard, psu, fans, and have even tried 4 different coolers but I am still getting the same problem. I’ve also had 3 different people including myself rebuild it to check if it was put together right. Anyone have any idea? The processor is the only thing I have not replaced, but if it were that could it even boot up like normal? Thank you

Did you apply thermal paste? If you did which thermal paste was it (exact name)? Did you check if you properly mounted the cooler onto the CPU?

4 different coolers all fail to cool the CPU? Are you installing them correctly and getting a proper mount? You can check the thermal paste spread (you are applying thermal paste right?) after taking the cooler off to see if there was good contact and pressure. In the AiO case, is the pump working?

It fried the cooler on startup? That sounds like either you plugged something where it didn't belong or your PSU could be bad. A smoke/burning smell is never good. Something burned.

Yes, I used the Arctic MX-4. I also cleaned with alcohol each time I reapplied. I believe I did mount them right because I used a similar AIO on the build before and it worked fine.

You didn't plug the rgb into the wrong header did you? Your motherboard has 2 4 pin argb headers and 2 3 pin gen 2 rgb headers. One runs at 5v, the other 12v. If you plugged a 4 pin argb plug into a 3 pin gen 2 header (yes you can do that) it will damage the rgb

Yes I did apply and reapply thermal paste while removing with alcohol beforehand. I really did freak out and instantly shut it off when that happened. After that I had some of my friends who have been in the PC community longer than I have look at it and they couldn’t find any problems with how it was installed, along with helping me rebuild it just in case. I also replaced the power supply and motherboard after the second time building which fixed the rgb problem on the fans, but not the cooler (rgb would either be red or just not turn on at all) The only thing I could think of now is the power supply beforehand could have potentially fried the Corsair commander I was using along with the cooler. I have a new one I am going to install soon with all new fans.

Okay I need to double check that and see if I did thank you for bringing that to my attention.

Yeah perhaps you plugged something in the wrong header and that's the burning smell. It's weird that 4 coolers all "fail" to cool the CPU properly though maybe a sensor got partially fried as well and is now reporting wrong temperatures.
