DPLII is a decoder for Dolby audio and DTS Neo:6 is an upmixing algorithm by DTS that tries to turn a stereo signal into a 6-channel surround signal. If you connect e.g. your blu ray player to the AVR through HDMI there's good chance it will automatically detect the sound format of the movie. To hear proper surround sound you will of course need a speaker setup for surround, e.g. two front speakers, a centre speaker and 2 surrounds and perhaps a subwoofer for 5.1.
