It's not a dumb question. There are less experienced users with technology, and the more advanced are happy to help those who aren't. 

 

Basic answer: no, they're not. Even if they were, it wouldn't be a great choice. Decent quality desktop RAM runs at higher speeds and is able to spread heat out from the chip better than laptop memory without heatsinks.

As has been said, laptop RAM generally uses a smaller "stick" (SODIM) than desktop RAM, so, other than some very small devices like the Intel NUC, the laptop RAM won't physically fit. Other than that, they are electrically the same. It would be impractical to try to get adapters - they'd cost as much as new RAM. :)

Note - other than in extreme overclocking situations, desktop RAM doesn't really need heatsinks or heat spreaders anyway - they're mainly for looks.
