i`m trying to convert a very old PC to a NAS with freenas.

The problem is that I cant install freenas because the CD -rom does not boot.

I have tried a different old CD-Rom (from a different old PC) and the same thing happens - nothing happens.

I know that ide drives are old but maybe you know the solution.

Or maybe I can make a bootable Flash drive so I wouldn`t even need the cd?

Any good videos on it?

I use i5-3470, 8GB kingston, SSD + 2x hdd, GTX 970

Is the disc you are using, a CD or a DVD? If it's a DVD, of course, it won't work in a CD (only) drive.

If it is a CD, simply use Windows Explorer to display the files on the CD and start FreeNAS manually. If you must boot from the CD to install FreeNAS, make sure you make a bootable CD - if you simply created a data CD, it may not be bootable.

Or, conversely, you may be able to boot the computer from some other CD and get to a command prompt. From there you can swap in the FreeNAS CD and start it manually from DOS.

If you google "bootable USB" I'm sure you can find lots of free apps to make a bootable flash drive.

A sieve may not hold water, but it will hold another sieve.
