I'm still quite concerned that this lenovo special motherboard might not be compatible with my gtx 1060. a bios update might fix that but there is no newer version of the bios for the m72e. Can it still work?

It should be fine. I don't have an M72e anymore, but I do have an M73 that I have used with a GPU and had no problems. Power was even more of an issue with that system as everything went through the motherboard.

So I have an old Lenovo Thinkcentre M72e with an i5 3470, 4gb ddr3 ram, 500gb hdd and im planning to upgrade the graphics from an intel hd graphics 2500 to a gtx 1060. My 280w psu is confirmed to be enough for a gtx 1060. Can someone confirm me that it will work because im afraid that the lenovo special motherboard might be a problem for the gpu upgrade. Im am a 15 yr old boy from malaysia and i really dont have the money to buy another gpu if it doesnt work.

280w is enough:https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/is-it-ok-with-a-280-watt-power-supply.3445647/#:~:text=Respectable&text=Better PSU always better.,GTX 1060 is just fine.&text=Use the 280W PSU until it can't run no more.

Does the 1060 you are looking at require additional 6 or 8 pin power connectors, and does the power supply in your IBM have the right cables?

oh. right. So I need to upgrade my psu but then will it work still?

Assuming IBM uses a standard connector on the motherboard and a standard size for the power supply to fit into the case.

Which form factor M72e do you have?

It looks like Lenovo used standard ATX connectors on the M72e. That changed with the M73.

Im using the full tower form factor

Then you should be alright to try a SATA adapter. Worst case it just doesn't work and you'll need to get a new PSU, but that's still preferable.

Is a sata adapter safe though? I dont want to burn my house down

Yes, at least until you can get something better. Do you already have an adapter or will you be buying one?

I'm still quite concerned that this lenovo special motherboard might not be compatible with my gtx 1060. a bios update might fix that but there is no newer version of the bios for the m72e. Can it still work?
