Coil whine help!

Go to solution Solved by CommanderAlex,

Coil whine is a natural phenomenon where inductors or transformers vibrate in a frequency that falls in the human range of hearing (20-20000 Hz). You just have to live with coil whine. Coil whine may not happen on lower end cards due to graphical settings being lower than their higher end counterparts. Also keep in mind, the higher the FPS, the more prominent coil whine may appear as the card is processing more frames per second.

If your new GPU makes coil whine, you can either live with it or send it back and get a replacement. You can turn up the case fans so the noise they generate overcomes the coil whine from the graphics card. Also, if it happens during a warranty period, some manufacturer's will not accept coil whine for an RMA while some others do so do research in the warranty on the manufacturer's website.

Hey,

A while back my 2060 super started buzzing after I cleaned my whole PC. I got a refund from amazon and I'm waiting to get a 3060ti. In the meantime I'm borrowing my friends old 1050ti. When playing games there is an extremely quiet coil whine (wayyy quieter than my 2060 super as I need to have the case side panel off to hear it.  I'm worried whether it'll be worse on the 3060ti

Is coil whine quieter on weaker cards? If the new GPU makes the same noise as my old one then what's my next course of action?

ok, because the noise on my 1050ti is super quiet but the 2060 super was unbearable. If my 3060ti begins to whine as bad as the old 2060 super when I get it should I consider getting a new psu? Could that be causing the faint whine in the 1050ti and the loud whine in the 2060 super?

It may or may not change, most likely will not have an affect of the coil whine on the graphics card. You can still have coil whine on a high quality power supply. I've had it with my EVGA P2 850W and GTX 1070/RTX 2080. The RTX card is a faint hum luckily and not this screeching sound that some people have with bad coil whine.

ahh ok, I have a decent power supply and the noise from the 1050ti is so extremely quiet (I have to put my ear to the case to hear it)

I probably wont bother then, if my 3060ti gets as bad as my 2060 super I'll buy a new psu cuz what are the chances of getting 2 whining gpus lol

Thanks :)

Anytime!! Just remember that getting a new power supply may not solve coil whine.

ok, tbh I kinda thought in the end i might upgrade my psu cuz its only 550w, it is gold rated so I'm praying that it'll be enough for my 3060ti lol.If it isn't ill have to get one anyways.

Most likely, a 750W unit will be needed with the 3060 Ti. Just remember that Nvidia's Amphere architecture is notorious for transient power draws and can trip OCP (Over-Current Protection) in lower end PSUs. If anything, you should be upgrading to a PSU of Tier A from the PSU Tier List

ok. The wise people of reddit said I should be ok especially if I dont overclock, however if I run into any bsod or anything like that I'll make sure to buy a new PSU.

Thanks for all the help
