RTX 3090 not posting (post code b2)

Go to solution Solved by Pi_,

Finally received a replacement, everything is now A-OK 😎

My new build just won't post. 2 days into "debugging" I am losing it.

Motherboard: MSI Meg Unify x570 (Bios version 7C35vA82)

CPU: Ryzen 9 5950x

GPU: ASUS RTX 3090 Strix OC

RAM: Trident Z Neo 4x 16GB 3600Mhz CL16

PSU: Corsair HX1200 80plus Platinum

Vertical GPU Stand: CoolerMaster Vertical Stand V1

Riser Cable: Linkup Pci-e Gen 4.0 Riser Cable

Note: Custom loop of hard line tubing makes it hard to test things.

I knew ahead of time that my original riser cable wouldn't work with RTX 3000 series so I purchased a Gen 4 riser ahead of time.

1st problem: Post code 0d with CPU debug led amber. I had wrongly assumed my x570 motherboard wouldn't need a bios flash to work with ryzen 5000 series.

Solution: I flashed the latest bios version.

2nd problem: Post code 0d with VGA debug led amber. I re-seated the GPU and the riser cable. No improvement. At this point I'm tired already and assume that the riser cable is faulty.

Solution: I drain my loop, replace the Gen 4 riser cable with the Gen 3 riser cable, slot in an old GPU and use soft tubing to close up my loop.

POST: I navigate bios and observe that bios version is indeed the one I flashed, I go into PCI Subsystem Settings and change PCI-E 1 lane from Auto to Gen 3.

Drain loop... re-connect RTX 3090 and re-assemble tubing.

3rd problem: Post code b2 with VGA debug led amber. Manual says "Legacy Option ROM Initialization" which is gibberish to me.

I looked around on google but I cannot figure out to do. I'll mention that I use three separate (not daisy chained) 8pin power cable for the GPU.

Not gonna lie, after months of fighting bots and scalpers to get my hands on the parts I feel pretty defeated. It's not like I'm new at this either, I felt pretty confident in my assembling/debugging skills up until now.

Thanks a lot to anyone that read this. I am ready to drain my loop and re-assemble it over and over if need be. I just need someone to point me in a general direction.

Have you tried reverting to an older BiOS? Looking at the support page for that board, that BiOS version is in beta, so that can cause a lot of weird issues. Try flashing version 7C35vA7 to see if you can get the board to at least post and get to Windows. Performance will not be great with the older BiOS version, but its a hell of a lot better than quite literally, no performance.

Edit: Also, you don't need to drain and refill your loop each time you try to get into Windows. As long as you don't try gaming on it and components stay idle and not powered on for more than 3 minutes at a time, you'll be fine, especially for just troubleshooting.

Have you done the obvious yet?
Put the card back to stock, stock cooler, NO riser cable and put it in the board and see if it works directly?
This is ALWAYS the first thing you do before trying to block stuff....if the card is DOA, you save yourself a ton of work that way.  And if it works that way, then you have an idea where to start troubleshooting...

@RONOTHAN## I'll follow your advice, flashing the bios will revert the PCI-E Auto -> Gen 3 and I will have to drain the loop in order to use my old GPU and re-access the Bios to change it over.

@FalkentyneI did a "dirty build" before de-assembling the GPU, it worked. I haven't tried seating it directly into the Slot since that initial build though. If the above does not work I will try with the gpu direct into the motherboard.

It's quite late here, I'll probably not get back to you guys before tomorrow. Wish me luck.

MSI Global (VGA compatability)
MSI Global (Storage compatability)

legacy mode will make the motherboard work with unsupported hardware... most of the time...

3090 is not listed you will have to wait for a new (non-beta version) of the BIOS to come out in order to not operate with legacy mode (from UEFI)

or try reverting BIOS to
7C35vA7 incase the resizable bar is causing issues.

Well, I re-assembled the stock cooler for the GPU and plugged it direct onto the motherboard. Everything turns on, rgb,  fans are spinning, but still no post. It gets stuck on post code 97 which is "Console Output Devices Connect" with VGA debug light amber.

I'm going to RMA it. Thanks for your help.
