Boot Issues with new build

Enterra

The Specs:

Asus x570 Tuf Gaming Plus WiFi

AMD Ryzen 3700x > 5800x

EVGA GTX 970>Asus 3080 Tuf Gaming

4x8gb CL16 3600 Ballistix

ROG Strix LC 360 RGB

Seasonic Focus GX-750

Fractal Meshify s2

The Story:

My fiancé bought me a new monitor (aw3420dw) )for my birthday! My old FX-8350 & gtx 970 couldn’t really push 5 million pixels in a satisfactory manor... so after many years I decided to finally build a new tower.

Due to scarcity of parts, my first configuration of this system used a last gen 3700x and my old GPU, a GTX 970. It worked well enough, but when I lucked out on a 3080 I replaced the old card. I eventually found a 5800x and picked it up even though it was a 5900x that I was looking for. Beggars can’t be choosers.

In either case... thats when my problems began.

The Problem:

When I found the processor, I had to pick up a cooling solution as well since they don’t come with a cooler these days. I grabbed an Asus ROG Strix LC 360 RGB. A bit overkill, but it worked with Aura sync and it made me happy. So cool.

Got it home. Got it installed. System posted. Configured system. Booted to windows. All good so far. I ran a few benchmarks in 3dMark. It was at this time I noticed the first issue. A few of the benchmarks crashed... but the score was a big improvement over the 3700x and the 3080 was holding steady so I didn’t think anything of it. (Screenshot attached)

Then I shut the system down to clean up the cable management and I found that when I plugged it back in it wouldn’t boot. Other than setting up the memory in D.O.C.P., I’ve performed no overclocking on the system.

Workarounds and Observations:

1. If I reset the CMOS, the system will boot

2. The system will boot reliably unless I enable D.O.C.P. and disconnect all power to the system

3. The system will boot reliably at all times if I do not setup D.O.C.P.

4. With the 3700x, I was able to run the memory reliably at 3600Mhz via D.O.C.P.

And now the weird ones...

5. After installing the AIO and the 5800x the RGB on the motherboard and AIO remained on even when the PC is off which is a new behavior

6. After shutting the system down if I short the clear CMOS jumper, the RGB in the fans comes on (video attached)

What I’ve Tried:

1. This sounded like a short.... so I rewired the system. Twice.

2. I pulled the system out of the case and the behavior persisted even when it was running on top of the motherboard box

Plea For Help:

I’m not one to give up easily or ask for help... but I’m asking for help. While I did some pretty extensive searches and climbed down several rabbit holes, I couldn’t find anyone who had quite the issue I’m seeing... but if anyone could offer some helpful suggestions or point me to a post that might help, I’d be grateful.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this.

@Enterra Just to make sure THIS is not causing the problem...did you update the motherboard BIOS firmware to a version where it FULLY supports the Ryzen 5800X? X570 and B550 boards DO NOT properly support Ryzen 5000-series out-of-the-box if it left the factory before 5000-series release.

You need at least BIOS version 2607 for proper Ryzen 5800X support.

BIOS 2607 is dated 2020/08/17.

ASUS since, has released 4 other BIOS (3 beta, 1 release).

Actually, I just figured out that the EZ updater wasn’t finding the new BIOS versions. I never trust those dorky updater apps. I have no idea why I was using it this time. Anyway.... I just downloaded v3001 and am installing it now.

I’ll kick my own ass if it was this easy. *sigh*

Thank you! I will update shortly.

@-rascal- Well, it seems you were right in part at least. The system became stable again after updating the bios. I feel that I can say that with authority after several days testing.

The other small issue I found is that one of the RGB wires had a small break in the insulation. I taped it up and it appears that the fans on my radiator no longer illuminate when clearing the cmos.

Hopefully this post will help someone else in the future. I know it helped me. Thank you!
