Hey, i recently bought a new CPU for my computer, i will start off with telling you my specifications which is

Motherboard: M5A99X EVO R2.0

OLD CPU: Phenom II X2

NEW CPU: AMD FX 8350 8 Core

GPU: Powercolor 7970

Powersupply: 500W Coolermaster

So, i took out the old CPU, everything was working fine but when i put in the new one and started up the computer

the fans started spinning but i didn't get splashscreen, the screen was all black. So i updated Bios to the most

recent update but it still didn't work, I am left clueless. So the problem is my new CPU isn't working but when i put in the

Old one it works again, i tried putting in my friends AMD FX 8320, Even tho its pins is a bit bent it didn't work either.

I am very thankful for every response since i have no idea at all what the problem could be.

Best regards, whitesound.

so you are now on BIOS 2201 with the old chip installed? got the 8-pin CPU power plugged in? 4-pin is fine for the Phenom.

Did you change the clock speed etc for the 8350 as well?

I usually get away with CPU changes without a CMOS reset by changing multi to the CPUs speed, ram timings inplace but reduced speed to 1333, and voltage on normal. I let it reboot then go back into the bios to make more changes as the CPU voltage will most likely change.

This must be done in the Bios and i can't even get there. Should i do this with my old CPU and then switch?

Additional information that might be good to know is, i had another motherboard before, AsRock 970 Extreme 4, With a AMD FX 8320 CPU, Which worked well and there was enough power for it.

So it feels kinda wierd that it wouldn't be enough power for the computer to start with a different motherboard and a slightly better CPU.

You could try to set the clock and ram speed for the 8350 while setting the voltage to 1.40 volts. Save it to CMOS then stop it from rebooting and then switch CPUs.

If all else fails you can do a clear CMOS and try again with the old CPU and the new CPU. If it will only boot with the old cpu then I would look at ram to make sure it is in dual channel and only using two sticks.

If you do have another board to try the 8350 in then you should try that first to take the motherboard out of the question.

After all of that is done and you still have issues you may want to look at RMAing the CPU with AMD although at this point it appears to be a motherboard issue.

I really don't see how that would help my computer boot.

See if the CPU boots in another board and the CPU is the only viable and it doesnt post at that time then I would RMA the CPU.

Do you have another board to put the 8350 in?

I put the CPU in my friends computer with a MSI 990 FXA, motherboard and it worked fine.

install the FX8350 unplug the psu from the wall, take out the bios battery for about 5 minutes put the battery back in.

And try to boot then.

the EVO R2.0 mobo should normaly support vishera out of the box. No bios update needed.

If it just refuses to boot, the only thing i could think of, is the ram not working with the cpu. so you could try your friends ram. to sort that out.

I used the same RAM i am using now with my old CPU which is an FX8320 and it worked great, since FX 8320 and FX 8350 is kinda the same i don't think that should be an issue.

Yes on both the questions.

The cpu is working on a different system and your old cpu works with your own mb so its kinda obvious the bios is outdated.

Just install your old cpu in your own MB update the bios, put the 8320 back in and should work.

Anyways 2011 is the first release bios that doesnt support the 8350. That starts to support at bios version 1006 as you can see here: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A99X_EVO_R20/#support

The voltage is built in to the chip. When posting it just reads the cpu out, it should only overvolt after post.

Well the first release bios is 0211 so I confused it..

Which psu do you have?

A cooler master 500W, my guess would be the cooler master extreme plus 500W which isnt within the atx spec.

I switched my GPU to a low end GPU, unplugged my DVD and HD but it still didn't work. Yes i have a CoolerMaster Extreme Plus 500W

i thought your old cpu was the phenom?

Now im getting confused lol :)

Anyway it still could be the ram its unlikely but if you don´t try it, you don´t know it, its easy to put one ramstick from your friend in.

Also try your friends psu.

Then you know the clue.

Phenom was my really old CPU xD, yeah i could try a friends RAM but it's not that likely since some computers even can start without ram.. This one doesn't start at all.

But still its a strange issue. youve got
