internet speed bad

Go to solution Solved by DogKnight,

Powerline adapters can provide a lot of variance in terms of performance. They depend greatly on the quality and age of the wiring in your house. Can also be affected by splits in the lines, other devices, etc.

If you want to isolate the issue, move your computer within range of your router and plug it in directly to test.

I suspect the Powerline adapters are the cause based off my own experience with them. And there isn't much you can do unless you want to get your house re-wired. Would be many times cheaper to buy a wireless NIC or physically run an ethernet cable yourself.

How is everyone else connected?

What is the rough age of the home?

Are you talking about a speedtest from speedtest.net or fast.com or something or via browser downloads/steam/etc.?

What powerline adapters specifically?

Easiest way to test things out is by eliminating variabls ONE AT A TIME. Move your PC to a location where you can hardwire it directly into the modem/router, even if it's just temporarily to test. If you don't get good speeds on your PC when directly hardwired into the modem/router but other devices on the network do, this indicates a problem with your PC. If you do get good speeds hardwired directly into the modem/router, that points to your home's electrical wiring being bad quality or too far a distance between the 2 powerline AV adapters for the adapters to provide good speeds. (This assumes the adapters are good, of course.)
