The most common method I know of is with After Effects.

Something along the lines of this:

Free?

AE isn't free, no. You can get a 14(?) day trial I believe, but you're limited to that time frame. Getting into the Adobe suite today means a Creative Cloud subscription.

I know there are free/open source alternatives, however I do not know what they are, nor how (including how well) they work. I believe I remember reading some time ago that Blender had visual effect editing capabilities, but you'll have to do your own digging on that matter.

I added a bit to my post while you were submitting yours, give it a quick read again.

Unfortunately, I don't know much of anything about Resolve, is this of any help?

I'm not much of any help on this front unfortunately. Hopefully somebody else with more experience with AE alternatives is able to help you out more. The only experience I have with any of these programs is exclusive to AE.
