Budget (including currency): $1500-2500 (includes monitor)

Country: US

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Video/Photo Editing and gaming

Hey guys i made a thread like this last year but I instead put my money elsewhere. With the state of the virus here in the states probably not getting better soon and it being pretty cold outside. Im hoping to finally build a pc. Ive been playing on an optiplex 7010 and 7020 for almost a decade now and it barely ran the games I played in the past. Now its getting in the way of my work with photo and video editing software either being super slow or crashing multiple times in a session. Im looking to kill two birds with one stone here and build a pc that can run games at high fps at high settings and also handle the workflow of having editing software. I know that I dont need a machine that’s crazy powerful for the editing workflow but after dealing with the current pc i have, I thought id treat myself since this is my first build. As for the monitor my target is currently a 1440p 144hz. lmk what your guys’ thoughts on this are.

General thoughts:  building a PC is quite difficult this close to Christmas and during covid.
There have been newly announced products that are a lot faster than the previous ones but the new components can be very hard to actually get ones hands on.

AMD is still competing very strongly against intel and has been for multiple months.  Their newest cpu is the 5000 series but is apparently difficult to actually obtain.

the new video cards are even more difficult.  It is projected that supplies will be better by Q1 2021, but it’s just a projection. It is an extremely unsettled time.   In general it is easier to get sufficiently fast parts aside from GPUs than GPUs themselves though and intel has in general better availability in the US than AMD even tough their equipment tends to be slower and more expensive.  If I was building a system today, I would look at doing AMD but only if possible and depending on price.  AMD’s advantage has been superior price performance not raw performance, and prices have gone up to the point that AMD is not always competitive.  It depends heavily on what price parts can be bought for.  If prices are lost, AMD wins hands down.  Prices frequently aren’t list though.  One of the main motivators in gaming PCs is creating a machine that can play any game that could come out for the new consoles.  For this reason alone I personally am a proponent of 8/16 over 6/12 CPUs. If I was building a computer now (literally this minute) for that budget it would look something like this:

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 3.6 GHz 8-Core Processor  ($329.00 @ B&H)
Motherboard: MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($179.99 @ B&H)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory  ($70.99 @ Best Buy)
Storage: Team GX2 1 TB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($78.98 @ Amazon)
Case: Phanteks Eclipse P300A Mesh ATX Mid Tower Case  ($49.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $708.95
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

notice there is no video card or monitor there.  This is intentional.  What video card one has defines what monitor one has and video cards are an up-in-the-air mess right now

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

I appreciate the reply back, atm im not in a hurry to buy all the parts for the reason that their is alot of scarcity with parts and to save some cushion money. Im willing to wait and buy one part at a time. In terms of compatibility I had my eyes set on the rtx 3060ti or the 3070 for the posted prices. But would it be better to get an amd card with an amd cpu. Again im only just starting this journey lmao, so My research is only beginning.

Unknown.  Or at the very least heavily disagreed on.  Both cards are brand new and neither are very available.  The two lines seem to be close enough in performance and price to make the choice more availability based than anything else.  They do behave very differently, but various strengths and weaknesses are close enough to be use case situations.

I should also mention there was no PSU in that build as well as that is also graphics card dependent.

This is what im thinking. Easily fits in my budget but ill have to see if my psu needs to be changed. As for the motherboard the one that was better was $250 more so I decided to get this one. Lmk what the thoughts are. Things may change based on reviews (mainly the gpu ) as time goes on.

As far as PSUs go the standard here is the PSU tierlist and the evga g+ isn’t one it.  There are numerous evga g series PSUs at a through d grade.  Most of them have 2 letters thoug GA, GB, etc..  there is no G+
