Which CPU for this kind of workload (Heavy sites with satelites, big Excel/PDF files etc.)?

I made a list of all the tasks I do in front of my PC. Can you please help me choose the best CPU to make my work and game as smooth as possible? I do not have a budget limit but i like to pay a fair price for what I get. I consider the following CPUs:

  • Ryzen 9 5900X (available for 788$)
  • Ryzen 7 5800X (available for 733$)
  • Ryzen 9 3950X (available for 855$)
  • Intel i9-10900K (availablefor 652$)


At the moment I run the i7-3770K OC to 4,8 Ghz, GTX 1080 ti, 3 Samsung SSD, DDR3 RAM. I am planning to upgrade my CPU, MOBO, RAM, m2 and cooling. In the future I will also upgrade my GPU. I heard the 10900K is best for OC, is this true (I will do OC)?

 

Constantly:
Google Chrome (heavy sites that use satelite images, maps, video).

Moving around the computer (folders, loading photos etc.)

Excel (big, slow files)

PDFs reading (big, slow files)

 

Everyday:

Photoshop

Games: Apex Legends, Cyberpunk 2077, GTA V, Forza Horizon 4, Red Dead Redemption 2, The Witcher 3, Control, Death Stranding, World of Warcraft.

 

Future plans:

Virutal Reality (games etc.) - Often

OCR of books - Rarely

Virtual machines - Rarely

 

Red - Most important for me

Most of your uses are single-thread bound. This gears you towards a Zen 3 based CPU. You likely won't see much benefits from the additional cores, unless you're doing really heavy work in Photoshop.

 

My reccomendation would be the Ryzen 5 5600X or Ryzen 7 5800X. Neither Intel nor AMD benefit significantly from overclocking, like the 3770K does. PBO will take care of that for you, on AMD's side. CPU Turbo Boosts has come a long way in the last 7 years.

Mostly the games. Excel will use mutli-core to some degree, but generally in big slow documents it's not worth it to get more than 4 cores for Excel work. Load and calculate times will be single thread bound 95% of the time (Except in very very specialized cases). It's best to design the spreadsheets to be efficient, rather than throwing expensive CPU's at it.

If choosing between Ryzen 7 5800X for 733$ and Ryzen 9 5900X for 55$ more would you still go for 5800X or upgrade to 5900X?

The question is if the $55 adds that much more value to the system (and solution) as a whole.

 

I reccomended the 5600X and 5800X on the basis that more than 6 Zen3 cores will not add much more value to the system and solution.

I should also touch on VM's. 6 Cores is enough for most VM-hosts, depending on what you need to do from within the VM. Most tasks can use 2 threads in a VM and be buttery smooth.
