Laptop to Tablet project

I'm aiming to build my own tablet from an old-ish laptop (3 years), I will be completely taking apart the assembly and reconstructing it in a new case which will be 3D printed of appropriate plastic then finished.

The only issue with this is the screen.. It's a low pixel density 1366x768 non ips monstrosity that I would not like to transfer over but I lack understanding.
I'm hoping somebody can inform me if laptop mobos themselves have built in functionality meaning it will reject anything it's not comfortable with or if this is left to the  attached circuit board and I could simply plug a new 30pin into it? I was once told that 30 pins are kin to hdmi cables? Is this true? Have you had experience changing or upgrading screens? Built your own tablet and want to showoff / give me advise? Let the information come forward.

Cheers
