Depends on the situation, but my usual recommendation is 2-3 intakes on the top/front (depending on the case), and 1-2 exhausts on the bottom/back. It's usually better to have more intakes than exhausts, because positive air pressure inside the case (i.e. more air coming in than going out) helps discourage dust buildup.
