Hey guys,

I have started to notice some behavior where I'm getting lower performance than average while gaming. My GPU is supposed to be the bottleneck in my build but I noticed an odd pattern where my GPU wouldn't exceed 75% no matter how demanding the games are. Only in rare occasions I'm seeing 95% but in general it's running much lower.

I have tested several games to confirm this and it seems in general I have some intrusion causing the limit in performance.

Specs:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 3.8 GHz 12-Core Processor

CPU Cooler: Wraith Prism Cooler

Motherboard: Asus TUF GAMING X570-PLUS ATX AM4

Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600

Storage: Cruicial MX500 1 TB SSD + Seagate BarraCuda 2TB

Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 8 GB G1

Case: Lian Li O11D XL-W

Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 P2 1000 W 80+ Platinum

I am currently waiting on a RTX 3070 and I am afraid I won't benefit from the upgrade if my GPU is already not fully utilized. Any help would be appreciated.

My GTX 1080 is hitting max 83°c with quiet BIOS settings, 75°c if I switch to turbo which is noisy so I tend to avoid it. The 3900x has no problems with Prism cooler, being able to boost up to 4600-4650 mhz at 81°c max. It crossed my mind that my GPU is throttling but it seems to be holding up so far. I'll try to redo some testing in an open case for better thermals and report back.

The next upgrade I had in mind was some sort of Asetek 360 AIO and a vertical GPU mount for the 3070 which should arrive tomorrow. Maybe I'll pull the trigger on the cooler sooner.
