I'm looking for headphones that I can use plugged into my PC at home, and wirelessly to my phone on the go. I already own Audiotechnica m40x's and Philips shp9500's, and while I do prefer the wide sound stage of open back headphones, I know that closed back would be better for travel. I have tried on the Sony XM4's and while they were comfortable and seemed to have good imaging, a friend suggested the Sennheiser Momentum 3's, as they apparently have a more neutral sound and better construction. I prefer a neutral sound as I listen to a wide range of genres, and did not like the V shaped curve of something like the Beyerdynamic dt990. I work at best buy, and can take advantage of my employee discount for any brands sold there, but my budget is somewhere around the $300 mark, so if they are sold by somewhere like amazon, keep that in mind. Any questions you have I would be glad to answer, and I know this is a strange use case, but I'd like to just have one pair of headphones for all my uses, instead of spending more to get one for home and one for travel

What about those sony noise cancelling ones? They should be on sale right now as well. Not quite "neutral" but the comfort and ability to go wireless on the go should fit nice with what you're looking for.

Yeah I tried on the XM4's at work and they are pretty nice, the only thing I didn't like was the fact that all your controls are done by touch, and I feel I would accidently mess with it. If there are any XM3/XM4 owners that would be willing to vouch for them, it would be appreciated. The sound profile is one that I did like, for the short time I was able to demo them, but of course they are far from neutral. This is something I can give some leway too because of course headphones are for music and music is supposed to be enjoyed, not ALWAYS analyzed

Honestly, I have never had an experience with a planar, and dont know enough about the tech to know if it is something I would like or not. The only thing I can say is I thought they were more on the high end i.e. high price so I never considered them

There in lies the problem, I dont have a good amp. I would like to be able to drive my headphones from stock motherboard audio or a phone, as I use my headphones on the go frequently, and plug into client devices at Geek Squad, and would like to avoid purchasing a portable amp/dac. Honestly, having 1 headphone for everything is to reduce price AND complexity, in a way

so an easy to drive fairly neutral headphone? open back I would maybe go for the hd 58x

The 58x is still a 150 ohm, vs my approx. 50 ohm current headphones, do you think stock audio solutions would be powerful enough to drive 3 times the resistance? Also, I was also considering closed back as 1. they wont leak as much sound in public, and 2. I was also looking at wireless headphones to pull double duty as home headphones plugged in

ah right thought that was strange as well. uhh akg k371 or akg k361 are porettty good the 371 though is heavier in the bass region while the 261 is a more neutral headphone. and the 58x is a pretty damn easy headphone to drive

How is the durability of the k3(7/6)1? I'd like to have something that I don't have to worry about snapping in my bag. Also, the 58x may be easy to drive from a good soundcard, but from chromebook headphone jacks and iphone 7's, the little things matter

I can run the 58x off my laptop and one plus 6t dongle pretty easily/ they should be fairly durable headphones. pretty well built and can fold when they are in you bag

That is good to hear, the higher impedance scared me away initially, but I guess it only comes into play with something inefficient like the 6xx with 300 ohm impedance. Do you know of any good bluetooth headphone adapters that could drive something like that, as I have an iphone se 2020 and freeing up the charger port would be useful for night time listening

The 371 has a Bluetooth version but I've heard mixed things about it. Personally I use a fiio btr5 it should be able to drive the akg k371

Yeah. The impedance is high. That will contribute to hardness to drive. BUT headphone sensitivity is a big factor as well. The HD58X's are around 104dB 1khz/vrms compared to for example the DT 770 pro 80ohm are 96dB which is actually much harder to drive.
