New build planned

Joe Down

Budget (including currency): max £1,200

Country: UK

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: COD Warzone, Cyberpunk, ETS2

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): See below

Current build is old,

CPU - Intel I7-3770

GPU - 1060 6GB ASUS STRIX

RAM - DDR3, probably 1600Mhz

Current frames are 60-80 on warzone, 1080p all settings low

Play on a 27" 1440p 144Hz Samsung monitor (but I can't hit 144Hz currently - not even at 1080p!)

Planning on upgrading to the below:

What are peoples thoughts? Anyone know what sort of frames I'd expect in warzone on the new build as comparison?

Sticking with Intel rather than AMD on CPU because a) I just prefer Intel and b) Stability

I've opted for i9 as it has 2 more cores than the i7 - I've prefer to get onto socket 1200 to future proof, rather than buy a better 1151 socket.

Opted for RTX 3070 as a cheaper alternative, but still good performance.

Everything which says purchase for £0.00 I already have, and will be using all the parts in the new build.

Thanks

Joe

the ryzen 5 5600x will beat the 10900f in gaming for cheaper. there are no stability issues, but if you still prefer intel, go for it. but you really don't need a 10900 to play at 1440p. a 10600k would be enough.

also that 212 evo can't handle a 10900f.

my advice generally would be to spend less on cpu and more on gpu. a 10600k or a r5 5600x wiith a 3080 would make more sense than a 10900 with a 3070.

Keep in mind that AMD is going to launch their gpus soon as well. Their offerings are very competitive, with the 6800xt being cheaper, using 20 watts less, and beating the 3080 in certain games.

Would a 5600X still play ok on 1440p?

Given the release of the 6000 series for AMD, and the price range being quite generous, a 5600X (£280 ish) and 6800XT (£500 ish). Is significantly cheaper than the intel and nvidia equivalent at £910. Would you recommend upgrading either, or is that combo well balanced and sufficient?

i would definitely go for the 5600xt, as there have been plenty leaks already showing that it's a very strong cpu, better than current gen amd and intel cpus.

as for the new amd gpus, there haven't been independent benchmarks yet. they seem to say the 6800xt is on par with the 3080, and the 6800 a bit better than the 3070.

you also need to pay attention to stock levels. as of now, it's nearly impossible to get a nvidia 3000 series card, as it's out of stock everywhere.

also, if you care about ray tracing, the nvidia implementation is likely better.

in summary, my advice would be to go with the 5600xt and whatever gpu you can find in stock between 6800, 6800xt, 3070 and 3080. they will all handle 1440p very well.

How does this look?

Ryzen 5 5600X, B550 motherboard, and the GPU not incl in there would be the 6800XT.

Do you think (a) 16Gb is enough memory for AMD, and (b) 500W PSU is enough?

Thanks

Joe

Try to go for 3600Mhz ram. That should allow you to get the most out of your cpu. Also im not sure if 500W is enough for a 6800XT and 5600X

geometry is hard

Thanks, I'll update. is 16Gb enough though?

I'll look at a 750W PSU.

yes 16GB should be perfectly fine for gaming. As long as it's around 3600mhz you should looking good. 750W should be enough aswell.

Dang, I didn't know that kit was so expensive in the UK. This is CL16 3600mhz, but its $30 cheaper https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/2TFKHx/crucial-ballistix-16-gb-2-x-8-gb-ddr4-3600-memory-bl2k8g36c16u4b

Cheers will take a look.

Assuming brand doesn't matter, as long as I stick to 3600Mhz and CL 16? (Don't want higher than 16 I'm assuming for gaming).

Well higher than CL16 will be fine, but its the most ideal situation for gaming. Also, brand name does matter, but Crucial is a very well known, trusted brand. You should be fine :)

Also, the B550 has a warning about needing a BIOS update to run on a 5000 series. Although overclockers says it's ready to drop straight into the 500 series mobo, so assuming it's fine?

Not sure how I can update the bios without plugging in my Ryzen 5600X?

Last point then, do you think there will be much performance getting a Nvme drive to replace one of my samsung SSDs?

it should come with the right bios. if not, that board has a bios flashback feature which means you can update the bios with a usb stick even without a cpu in.

as for nvme, it doesn't have a huge performance difference in gaming, but since one of your drives is 64gb and can barely fit anything on it, i'd recommend getting a new drive as well. maybe 500gb or 1tb.

Ahh right thanks,

Yeah my 64Gb drive is OS only.

250Gb for main games, and 1TB for the rest of the crap!
