If your account is negative on PayPal will they take the money from a linked credit card? I know they will take it from debit cards and banks but what about credit cards? Thanks

I thought with PayPal it tells you that it will take the money from a bank account / credit card before the purchase and if nothing is linked to it, you won't be able to complete the purchase.

I canceled the transaction and clicked refund but the money was on hold. It eventually disappeared and then a couple weeks later I had money waiting for me. I don't have paypal balance enabled so I just paid it to my CashApp address. Which now even if I was to send the money back PayPal wants a debit card or bank which I am not going to give them. I messaged them and am waiting for a response. The persons reasoning too was accidental purchase which I don't buy as I cancelled the order for them and they acknowledge this without a dispute. So the money never left their account and it says it was held and the transaction is classified as cancelled lol

For anyone who ends up in this siuation in the future, here is what you need to do:

  Reveal hidden contents

First of all, I hope you didn't enter your SSN when you made your account. Otherwise everything I am about to say here is null. The following is a way to get out of Paying back paypal, but if you have your Social Linked Paypal will send your negative balance to collections and damage your credit. Assmung you never gave Paypal your SSN the follwing applies:

 

If you account goes negative, Paypal will attempt to pull money from any and all sources linked to your account after 30 days. This includes linked credit cards, Debit Cards, and linked Bank accounts. 

 

As far as I know there are two ways to prevent Paypal from pulling money from your accounts:

 

1. For credit/debit cards - 

 

You have to get a new number. Call your bank and tell them you lost your card and they will give you a new number. However in some cases this will not work. This is because some banks allow "recurring subscriptions" to process on Old credit card numbers including Paypal, which is not what you want. You will have to contact your bank directly to verify if switching your card number truly works. I had an account go into the negative with a linked Chase and Discover Credit card, and changing out my numbers for new ones did work those ones. But it didn't work with my Amex cards for example where Paypal still billed me. The only way to know with absolute certianty is to close all linked accounts.

 

2. For linked bank accounts -

 

Short term: You will need to call your bank and tell them to issue a Stop Payment for anything related to Paypal. However this means future Paypal accounts will blacklist that account/routing number, meaning you can't link your old Checking account to a new Paypal account. This will not make the problem go away leading to:

 

Long Term - You need to close and reopen your connnected bank account in order to Obtain a new account number, or better yet open a new bank account exclusively for Paypal Payments (see mine in the third spoiler). This will prevent Paypal from Pulling money from you since your old bank account no longer exists. 

 

So yes, Paypal is gonna try to do everything they can to get their money back and the only surefire way to prevent it is to close all linked accounts to Paypal. 

 

If you ever use Paypal again, here is what you need to do in the future:

  Reveal hidden contents

1. Have two Paypal accounts. A Regular account with your real info for selling things, and a "stealth" account you only use to buy things. More on this strategy below.

 

1. For your Primary account - Link A savings account that lacks the ability to overdraft and the ability to open and close accounts at-will online. I have my Paypal seller account linked to a Savings account at Marcus savings where I can do this. If my balance ever plunges into the negative, I can simply go to marcus, drain the savings account into another seperate savings acount, then close the savings account my Paypal account is connected to. This will be what you do for your "real" account.

 

2. For your Stealth account - Link your credit/debit card to this one. Since it's a Stealth account, if Paypal ever tries to plunge your primary account into the negative your secondary account will still survive. Since we only have a bank acocunt linked to our Primary account (and we just closed it), your "bad" negative Paypal has no access to any other funds and you got out of Paying Paypal back.

 

2a. If you don't want to have a stealth account -  Instead of Having a second account, you can also use virtual credit credit numbers and link those to Paypal like privacy.com or Capital one Eno. This way if your balance is plunged into the negative, you can simply go into your dashboard and "turn off" the virtual credit card number. I personally do not do this because I have some credit cards with rotating 5% back categories for Paypal, so I maintain a second account. But if you don't bother to optimize your spend across multiple cards, you can always link a virtual card number.

 

I just went on a long rant a couple weeks ago about how to prevent everything that just happened to OP. When will you learn?

A couple things. I provided a SSN but I used a fake one. I have no debit or bank accounts linked only credit cards. But I would have to close around 7 cards and I'm not about to do that since some are my parents cards from awhile ago. They also won't let you close your account or take cards off with an open dispute. What I find interesting is in my transaction history it says it was cancelled and held. I cancelled the order on eBay and clicked refund on Paypal. The transaction eventually disappeared but came back and said cancelled and held after I had the funds from the transaction. It also says their paypal is unverified so I think the money never left their account and they are trying to scam me
