Head-Fi thinks it's the Sennheiser Orpheus/He-90.  It's also the rarest and most expensive.

Sighted listening is a powerful thing though.  If you thought a pair of prototype apple earbuds were supposed to be $300, your brain might trick you into thinking they should sound good.

In this case, they cost about $30,000 USD.  You'd have no choice to hope your new HELOC wasn't for nothing, would you?

He also listed my HE-500s as the best bang for the buck headphone.  Which is probably true as long as you don't mind the earpads being a chore to change.  They sound $700 good though.  I mean, they better, right?

probably not many people think its the high end STAX headphone other think its the sen, you cant really call something "best"in the high end headphone world because its all personal preference

to be honest if you were getting the lcd 3 i wouldn't bother spending the extra over the Lcd 2 as to me they are the "best" headphone avalible

I haven't heard the LCD 3, however I have very briefly listened to LCD2 and other comparable headphones such as the HiFiMan HE-500 and HE-400. Quite frankly the Audezee's and the HE-500 sound very "dark" compared to other headphones using dynamic drivers. Some other headphones considering in the "worlds best" headphones are the Stax SR-007mk2. There is a very nice thread on Head-fi comparing a lot of different flag ship models, which you might find interesting.

What sort of amp were these headphones being driven with when you listened to them? Out of curiosity of course.

LCD2 on Little Dot MK IV slightly modded with other caps and tubes. HE-500 on Musical Fidelity M1 HPA and on my Audio-gd 10.2. All these were listened to briefly on at a meeting where head-fi enthusiasts meet up and listen to each others equipment.

I had the HE-400 on loan for a week, they compared to the others have a unnatural brightness over them, a strange spike in the 14-16 kHz region, which made them unbearable for me to listen to. However if you mod them you can probably get over that.

Depends on taste. To some, the grado rs1i's will sound the best. To some, the stax sr-009's will sound the best, and to others, the sennheiser hd800's will sound the best. It all depends on what genre of music they listen to, how well they are amped... etc.
