G.Skill TridentZ Memory stick- missing SMD component

WolfikCZ

Hi, i bought some G.skill memory but one of the sticks has missing SMD component and therefore PC wont boot it get stuck on DRAM error. Does someone know if it was a resistor or capacitor and if so what value is it ? Or can i just bridge the pads ?

Nope.

Warranty the memory as DOA.

I bought it on ebay it is not new memory.

You did purchase the memory as used in working order?

Return it for a refund.

You cannot just bridge the pads, you would need to figure out what the smd is and microsolder a new one in place

Bummer.

Probably won't be able to repair it without a schematic.

Definitely don't want to just jump the posts.

If you had another kit that was identical, you could perhaps steal the parts you need.

Maybe worth while to find memory with the same PCB that's non functional for sale on e-bay for cheap.

I have another  same stick but it is functional so if it is possible in some way find out if it is resistor or capacitor with multimeter, that would be nice.

  • 4 months later...

Came across this thread via duckduckgo. I hope I can provide an answer for anyone else coming across this post.

Although the pictures aren't very clear (matte-black PCBs are hard to see), it would appear that the missing component is connected between pin 139 and 140. Judging by various datasheets online, it appears that the missing component is a MLCC capacitor and those two pins are part of the SPD circuitry.

A picture of the good DIMM would help me confirm. If you would like to repair the memory instead of sending them in for repair (I sympathize with the lust to repair!), you would need to de-solder the corresponding component from the good DIMM and measure it's capacitance and size, order a new capacitor, and solder everything back in. It is possible and I have done it before on a few different DIMMs.

Of course, if you had all of the proper equipment to do all of that, you probably would've done it already! But anyways, good luck!
