Different pings - same computer

So, me and a friend is playing a game online. Post Scriptum, a mass multiplayer 40v40 shooter. 
When I see my ping, it's at between 30 and 40-ish... When he sees my ping, it's between 50 and 70-ish (and vice versa)... And we were wondering why? Shouldn't it be the same, since it's played on a central server somewhere that's sending out the same data? Or is the number displayed on his screen higher because it's something to do with the time it takes the signal to go from my computer to his and back, via the server. And not just the time from my computer to the server and back? 
Hope that makes sense and that I'm posting in the right subforum :)
