Here are some options:

 

1. Find some type of paper or cloth that works well with your mouse. Glue or staple the cloth to card board.

 

2. Ask in Craigslist if anyone is giving away an old or warn down mouse pads. Maybe you can fix it or use the materials towards making your own mouse pad.

 

I would just buy a mouse pad.
