So I have a custom built pc. I5 7400, rtx 2060, 16gb ram, and 450 watt psu. Ive had this build for 2 yrs now with not many problems. But one day it didn't turn on. I tried several things and eventually found that I had to unplug and turn off and then replug and turn on my psu to get it to boot. I have to do this everytime I shut it off. But after I do that everything works fine. In case it's important everyone I shut it down I use the windows shut down button.

Howdy and welcome.  :)

this is a hard one, at least for me.  It may not be for others.  Posting at the end of Memorial Day weekend may have meant that your post got missed by more capable people.  I may not be of any use.   I’ll give you what I got though it isnt much, and there may be better stuff out there.

The generic advice would be “replace the motherboard” but I’m trying to avoid that and there may be a better answer having nothing to do with my thought.

My thought:

Turning off and unplugging the machine forces it to maintain its cmos through the cmos battery.  Could be your cmos is getting corrupted and for some reason forcing the machine to maintain with the battery solves the problem.  Could also be your cmos battery is dead, and doing this forces the machine to defaults whereupon it works, but gets corrupted again during operation.  This makes a cmos battery replacement possibly problematic in that it could actually make the problem worse.  Might be worth trying anyway just to see if the problem becomes an issue where the machine won’t boot even after the reporting ritual is done.  One can always just put the old battery back.

This may not mean anything.  It could be a PSU issue, or it could be a software issue.

Are any of your parts still under warranty?

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.
