Ideally, until AMD's prototype drivers are released for their current generation cards, so probably a minimum of three months from now but likely longer. Crossfire is still at a huge disadvantage to SLI. That being said, a single GPU solution is always better.

I usually don't recommend multi-gpu setups unless you've already got the highest tier graphics card or the second highest.
But since you can almost double your performance by jumping from the 7870 to the 7970 I don't see the need for crossfire.
Wait until Nvidia releases it's 700 series cards next month & upgrade, prices are bound to drop by then.

I recently XFired my 6790, I have had no issues. It have good scaling in most games. I would do it if you have a  decent GPU but are on a tight budget. Of course if you have the money to buy a new GPU completely then go right ahead. As always do your research and find out if XFire is good for you and your PC or if you should just upgrade the card altogether.

I had crossfire 5770's and I only saw the dwarf frames that frame timeing is bringing to light when running at excessive FPS, except for in crysis which was unplayable for me with crossfire active
