Hey guys, I'm new here. Hoping anyone here can help me out with my issue, or at least explain what is going wrong.

So about a week ago I purchased an RTX 2070 Super. Excited to play games at higher FPS and better settings I came across a bit of a speedbump.

It turns out about 10 to 20 minutes into a session (usually graphically intensive games. Think Modern Warfare, Forza Horizon 4, Death Stranding.) my CPU will suddenly spike in usage and start to underclock itself, and then reset itself back to normal speeds. (From around 4400MHz down to 800MHz and back up) Causing heavy frame rate drops for a couple of seconds.

Things I've tried to do in order to combat this:

Re-applied thermal paste
Deleted, and reinstalled graphical drivers
Bought a new cooler thinking the old one simply couldn't keep up anymore
Lowered game settings

None of these things seemingly helped me fix the issue...

My specs (Taken from Speccy):
Operating System
    Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
CPU
    Intel Core i7 7700K @ 4.20GHz
    Kaby Lake 14nm Technology
RAM
    16,0GB Dual-Channel Unknown @ 1066MHz (15-15-15-36)
Motherboard
Gigabyte Technology Co. Ltd. H110M-S2PV-CF (U3E1)
Graphics
4095MB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER (Gigabyte)
Storage
    465GB Seagate ST500DM002-1BD142 (SATA )
    931GB Seagate ST1000DM003-1CH162 (SATA )
465GB Samsung SSD 860 EVO 500GB (SATA (SSD))

I was using a GTX 1060 before getting a new GPU.

I have attached screenshots of HWMonitor as extra information. If there is anything else you'd like to see/know let me know and I'll send that too.

I'm wondering if the VRMs are overheating and the CPU is clocking back because of that. An i7 is a lot to ask from a base-tier H110 board like that (besides the fact you can't overclock on it).

The thing I'm failing to understand is why is it suddenly now an issue. Everything worked fine with my GTX 960 and 1060.

So do you think the motherboard is the weak point here?

???????????????????????????????

bought the best gaming cpu thats also unlocked (assuming you bought it when it launched) and a cheap h110 motherboard????

come on bruh

99% sure this motherboard just cant keep with that 7700k on high clocks and since you have a 2070, the cpu does have to work a bit harder even though its a 7700k

sure

try looking for high end z270 motherboards

Gigabyte Aorus Z270X Gaming 5

ASUS PRIME Z270-A

Asus ROG Maximus IX Formula

those are the top end motherboards and since z270 chipset is 3.5 years old im sure you can get those motherboards for a good deal

intel has this stupid thing where only the 'Z' chipset (z170, z270, z370, z390, z490) supports overclocking while amd has 'X' and 'B' (x570, b450, b550)

:)

if those motherboards are still expensive my personal recommendation is Gigabyte's GA-Z270-Gaming K3

a friend on mine has it and its working with no problem, even when his 7700k is turboing

I think I'll have to go for that one yeah. Already spent way more money on all this than I originally intended to lmao.
