spacer.pngBudget (including currency): 500 dkk

Country: Denmark

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: none or retro games

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

So, I've got my hands on a classic design CRT TV and I thought it would be great for a compact system built in it or maybe just a retropie. It's a B&O MX1500 in white. The attached image is the red version.

First thing is getting my hands on a screen that will fit. Seems that it will hold up to 15.8" worth of 16:9 aspect screen so the plan is to hunt down a broken laptop at 15", 15.4" or 15.6" to harvest the screen. The big question for now is: should I prioritize getting a full HD one or might I just as well settle for less?

i think this is a question you need to ask yourself, not us.

Personally 480p/720p would be fine but others may disagree

Build update

I found a broken laptop for 100 dkk ($16) and ordered a controller board for about $25 and 12v power brick for about $20. The screen is 15.4" 1280x800 (16:10). It is about 2mm too wide but I can sort it out with some cutting.

It looks like I'll have perfect clearing for a controller board AND space for mobo. It'll be a month before I receive the controller board. Build total so far: approx $100. TBC

  • 3 weeks later...

Still waiting for a controller board but I cut the plastic to make room for the display, added some vinyl to the metal edges (8$ for a roll of self-adhesing vinyl wrap), drilled small holes to reuse the mounting holes and skrews from the broken laptop (it will be covered by a side panel). Pretty happy with the look so far.
