The crashes, do they produce the standard bluescreen, or is it a complete power loss?

A bluescreen would normally indicate driver problems, sudden loss of power is more concerning as the system believes that its in serious danger of damage and kills the power immediately, though this could also be caused by a driver problem (one where the driver isn't configured to respond correctly)

It doesn't sound like an overtemp issue, you'd experience heavy speed throttling on the CPU, also overtemp errors would be recorded in the system log.

The only other thing that could cause immediate powerloss would be dirty power (outside operating range) for the power systems on the PC. This can't be dealt with by software, so the system would just immediately power off.
